Warriors of the Amazon

The Huaorani tribe of Ecuador currently consists of almost 4000 people. In the last 40 years, since their first contact with civilized world, they have evolved from a free hunting and gathering society to living in mostly permanent forest settlements, withdrawing deeper into the jungle as the modern world closing on them. Some chose to shun contact with the outside, while others are growing ever more dependent on tourist money and bribes from prospective oil companies. The Huaorani now have about 6800 square kilometres of land which is about one third of their original territory.
